Circle of Inspiration Spotlight // Tia Atkins

Tia Atkins, Chicago Singer Songwriter and R+B Pop Artist, Interview with Heart On My Sleeve's Karl Schmitz for Circle Of Inspiration Artist Spotlight

Describe who you are and what you do:

I am an up and coming Asian-American artist, located in Chicago. My focus is R&B as well as Pop. My songs are made straight from my heart. I aspire to be nothing but the best when it comes to my music and sound.

What drew you to your particular creative outlet?
Honestly, writing has always been a gift of mine, and writing is how I express myself the most. Being able to construct my own lyrics to songs is rewarding in both sharing my work and a mental outlet. Being creative is what I know best!

When did you decide to pursue your passion?
I would say that I started to take my music seriously within the last 3 years. However, I released my first song, '1 am', a year ago, and that’s kinda how it started. The feedback I received from that project was absolutely the best thing ever - during a time in my life that was particularly hard.

Where do you draw inspiration from?
I definitely draw inspiration from my own personal life. That is really all that I know how to write, through experiences. Whether that means I go through a break up, or I went on a trip with my friends.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned on your creative journey?
To be PATIENT. I have been in many writing blocks just because I wasn’t living my life. Rushing creativity is the worst thing that you can do because it’ll ultimately become untrue in a way... at least that’s how I see it! lol

Nothing good comes out of rushing.

What are you currently working on?
Hopefully my first EP! I have a pretty long list of unreleased songs... I’m so excited! I am also on a journey auditioning with a tv talent show, so we’ll see where that goes. I can’t say much yet, but it has been an experience for sure.

Any words of advice for someone getting started in your field?
In the music industry, you really have to have the confidence and courage within yourself. It is not worth all the tears and heartache to put yourself down just because you’re “moving slow”.

This goes for patience as well; don’t rush, rather enjoy the journey you are currently in. Don’t be afraid to say no - especially for us females, we are worth so much! If you feel that a situation doesn’t necessarily feel like you, don’t do it. Trust your gut. Overall, just have fun! Whether you are producing, singing, or songwriting etc... we are all different creative individuals and we should explore ourselves to the extent.
